MADAME HOWARD FRENCH II 2008-2009

BRING TO CLASS EVERYDAY
1) Ring binder with four sections: a) homework  b) graded assignments  c) handouts
d) grammar notes  This will be checked periodically.

2) Textbook, workbook, pencil or pen and straight-edge binder paper.   I will not accept work done on paper torn out of a spiral binder. I also loan no pencils or pens--don’t ask me!
If you are missing necessary material, you will be sent to your locker to retrieve it, and you will be marked tardy for class.

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
To successfully learn a foreign language, students must be willing to try new experiences.  They must feel comfortable attempting new pronunciation sounds, working in front of the class, in small groups and with several different partners.  People are willing to do this in a safe, supportive atmosphere, where they don’t fear ridicule from their peers or their teacher.  Therefore in my classes, we have “homecourt”.  We are all part of a team--the French II team--and we want to win, that is, to learn and successfully complete the class.   Since we are all members of the same team, we support each other with acceptance, encouragement and respect.  Put downs, negative humor, ridicule and name calling are unacceptable in class.  Room 300 is our “homecourt” where we are all winners.  In addition to homecourt, I have some simple rules: no gum chewing or eating, no wearing of hats, no writing notes in English, no working on other subjects.

GRADES/ABSENCES

1) Homework is assigned every night, including weekends.  Unless I tell you otherwise, it will not be checked or evaluated and will not count in your over-all grade.  We will correct the homework in class every day, and even though it doesn’t count in the grading, I expect you to do your homework.  I assign it to help you learn the material and to help you do well on the assessments given in class.

2) Graded, collected work must be neat with no scratch outs.  It must be done in one color pen or pencil.  Graded homework assignments are to be done individually.  Students who work together will receive F's. Students with French-speaking parents are not to have their parents correct graded assignments before handing them in.  I accept graded work late, however the grade will be lowered due to tardiness.

3) After an absence it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.  Consult my homework page on Power School.  Don’t ask me what was missed!   It is your responsibility to arrange make-up tests and quizzes with me; I will not remind you.  I administer most of the make-ups in the classroom during lunch.  If you forget an appointment for a make-up quiz or test, your grade will be lowered.

4) For a planned absence--retreats, appointments, early dismissal for sports, field trips, personal business etc.--you are responsible for getting your work ahead of time and for being prepared when you return to class.  When a graded assignment or a test is planned on a day you know you will be absent, you must make arrangements with me before the absence.  If you fail to do so and hand in the assignment upon returning to class, I consider it late.  If you miss a test or quiz, your grade on the make-up one will be lowered.  If you arrive late to school and miss class on the day of a test or graded assignment, I expect you to take the test, or hand in the assignment THAT SAME DAY.

5) It is possible to retake a quiz or test if your grade is poor.  The retake will earn a grade no higher than 75%, and it will replace the original grade.  Before you retake a quiz or test, you must meet with me individually outside of class time  to go over your original work to make sure you understand your mistakes.

6) I expect you to be in class when the second bell rings.  If you are not, you are tardy.

7) The school-wide grading scale is:
100-95  A           72-70   C-
94-90    A-          69-67   D+
89-87    B+         66-63   D
86-83    B           62-60   D-
82-80    B-          59-0     F
79-77    C+
76-73    C

8) Grades will be computed in the following manner:
oral   25%
points & tests   50%
final   25%
