Academic Support Center (ASC) Newsletter
At the close of the first quarter, the ASC staff and students have been working diligently on learning study skills and incorporating them into academic classes.
Students in Resource Technology 9 & 10 are continuing to work on developing proficient study skills with Mrs. Tuttle and Mrs. Reay. Lessons covered thus far include organization/time management, grammar review, test preparation, note taking, self-advocacy, assistive technology (Inspiration), computer applications and keyboarding.
Please encourage your student to utilize strategies learned and take advantage of our computer programs: Inspiration [an idea mapping program creates study guides and helps with organizing essays and papers] and Kurzweil [a reader program uses scanned text material on the computer screen with the capability to have text read to students and create study guides on material read].
Senior students should be working on the college application process. Be sure to explore learning support services at the prospective colleges. I will be discussing these types of options with students. Encourage your student to speak to me about their prospective choices. There are still a few opportunities for students to take ACT and SAT tests.
I highly recommend you take advantage of our Parent Group sponsored event “Collaboration for Success,” a panel presentation. This will take place in the library on Thursday morning November 1st 7:45-9:00 AM.
If your junior or senior consultation student has not yet met with Ms. Casey this school year – please have them come to the ASC to set an appointment. It is important for us to discuss their current progress with their academic classes and transition to the college level expectations.
Please note that the next quarterly newsletter will be posted on the MC web page in the Academic Support Center section. Look for it at the end of next quarter.
