Biking at Six Sigma

NorCal finals, Race 5, Six Sigma Ranch
NorCal finals, Race 5, Six Sigma Ranch (Saturday May 5, 2018)
Caravanning to the venue this past weekend were so many vehicles from all over Northern California: athletes and their gear, teams and their trailers, families and friends. To get there, driving through the fire-devastated landscape from October’s North bay wildfires, it was all too easy to be weighed down by so much hurt and loss felt by so many in the surrounding communities. What an even more poignant blessing, therefore, to reach the race venue and witness the amazing community that is NorCal Mountain Biking. Overnight camping and all-day mountain bike racing with teams from all over Northern California should remind each of us of the importance and the blessings of a supportive community: coaches, parents, friends, and fellow athletes. These are gifts of love we should be able to take for granted in our youth, then learn to appreciate in a new way as we grow older. Gifts of time, of treasure, of tireless (or not so tireless) energy. Thank you coaches, thank you parents, for making it all possible, each in your own way. And now, off to the races…
Senior Siena McGibben was pleased with her performance, just 10 seconds from breaking in to the top 10. Sophomore Katie Shearin was very strong with her 3d place finish, missing 2nd by less than a second! Katie finishes an awesome 3d overall in NorCal. Sophomores Dillon Solway and Nate Wilson also did well, crossing the finish line together at 25th and 26th, in the top half of the field. Dillon finishes the NorCal season an awesome 7th overall. Chris Timboe took a penalty for trouble on the course, and still finished, nice job. And finally, Freshman Ryan Murphy had a good race as well. Also noteworthy were sophomore Lauren Mullin and freshman Harrison Turner, both unable to race this weekend, and yet they were both present, in support of their team-mates. Way to go. At the end of the day, Marin Catholic placed 10th as a team, and 9th overall in this NorCal season among 36 division two schools. Way to go, Cats!
This was the last NorCal race of the season. In two weeks, we will gather for one more competition, the California State Championship, which will be in Petaluma, on Sunday May 20. It will also be senior Siena McGibben’s last high school race (although the team looks forward to her presence next season, if rumor has it right). So much to look forward to between now and then!
