Barnes Pulls Her Weight

More than just a dance team captain, student council leader, and full time student, Mckenzie Barnes is a nationally recognized youth Olympic Weightlifter.
Mckenzie Barnes, was one of twenty-five U13 and U15 athletes chosen throughout the Nation to be placed on Team USA in the Sport of Olympic Weightlifting for the 2014-2015 Season.   During the week of October 11th through the 18th,  Mckenzie traveled to the Colorado Springs USA Olympic Training Center to participate in a week long intensive training program geared towards orienting Olympic Hopefuls to what it takes to make it to the Olympics.   She was coached by Former Olympians, The Team USA Head Weightlifting Coach Zygmunt Smalcerz and former USA Team Coach Dennis Snethen.  Mckenzie Barnes capped the week off with 3 Bronze Medals as a 48 Kilogram Lifter in her first International Weightlifting Federation Meet on Saturday October 18th.  Mckenzie took a Bronze Medal in the Snatch, the Clean and Jerk as well as the Total.

Mckenzie balances a full load of Freshman Academics, Student Council, and holds two Captains positions for the Junior Varsity  Cheer and Dance Team.   Mckenzie has been training under Coach Freddie Myles of Myles Head Weightlifting in Petaluma California since the age of nine.  One of her many goals is to promote the sport of Olympic Weightlifting and hopefully inspire other girls to join her great sport.  “You don’t have to look like a weightlifter to be a weightlifter” she says, and often talks about how the Sport of Olympic Weightlifting has helped her reach and obtain her goals in School, Cheer and in Life by giving her the confidence to try new things and not hold back.
