Close Meet at Novato

Track girls and boys had a good showing vs. Novato and Drake, with narrow losses on the boys side and improvements on the girls.
The Wildcat track team traveled to Novato High School on Thursday, March 19th, to face Novato and Drake.  It was another great day for track and field and the Cats brought their "A" game!

On the girls side
:  Veronica Boyce got the day started with a third place performance in the 1600 meters and she is only a freshman!  She ran a 5:54 for 1600 meters.  In the 100 hurdles, Janet Miramontes placed 3rd.  In the 400 meters, Julia Redman came out of nowhere to run a 64.70!  She also ran a great leg on the 4x400 relay to cement her spot on the relay team as well as the open 400 meters!  In one of the great stories of the day, Kristen Haenggi ran the 300 hurdles for the first time.  She had a great start and had already passed a few girls, but on the third hurdle she tripped and fell to the track.  Without hesitation, she got up and did everything she could to climb back into the race and even passed a runner!  She showed such grit and determination and she really was a great example for the Marin Catholic track and field team.  In the 100 meters, Tiana Anderson tied for second in 13.7, with Ihnken false starting and being removed from the race.  Danielle Fabiano came in right behind Tiana in 14.1 to claim 5th place.  Francesca Robello came to compete in the 800 meters and set a personal best by 11 seconds!  She began the race out near the front and never relented.  She ran a 2:45 and place fourth overall.  Freshman Veronica Boyce came in right behind Franny in fifth place.  Another notable performance was by Claire Sebahar in the 800 meters, dropping a huge kick at the end to set a personal best of 2:52!  In the 200 meters, Sarah Ihnken placed 2nd, with a time of 27.80, with Tiana Anderson a second back in 28.70.  Taylor Wirth set a personal best in the 3200 meters and ran a very tactical race in 13:35, only 29 seconds behind the winner!  Sarah Ihnken continued her dominance in the long jump, with a first place jump of 16'7" and won by over a foot!  Sarah will be representing us at Stanford in the long jump and the 4x100 relay.  Bailey Ash placed fourth with a jump of 14'3.5".  Distance runner turned Shot Putter, Elaine Shaw continued her upward swing and improved her personal best by over four feet this week!  She threw it 26'1", placing her third.  Merrion and Miramontes competed in their first shot put competitions and threw it 20'6.5" and 19'11" respectively.  In the high jump, Mchugh and the Bell sisters, Ashley and Lilly tied for 2nd place with jumps of 4'4".  Only one week after Addie Thompson learned the Triple Jump during our home track meet and jumped 20 feet, she jumped 25'7" and placed third, only three feet behind the winner!  Novato 75.5 - MC 45.5.  Drake 86 - MC 47.

On the boys side
:  The 4x100 team of Glasser, Margulis, Juarez and Peterson got the meet off to a great start by running a 44.0 and winning the race by a second!  This performance got them into the Stanford Invitational in early April!  Andrew Colletti, who rescued us last week in the 300 hurdles, helped us this week in both hurdle events.  He placed third in both the 110 and 300 hurdle events!  Our surprise freshman, Max Glasser, continued his rise to the top with a blazing 51.70 time in the 400 meters, placing him 2nd by .5 seconds.  If you don't know much about track and field, this time is flying for a freshman and also qualified Max for the Stanford Invitational!  Juarez followed Glasser in fifth place with a time of 53.90.  Darius Peterson, who was already a part of the winning 4x100 relay, won the 100 meters in 11.50 seconds!  Jake Laudenslager also jumped into the 300 hurdles, an event he had never run, and placed 4th in the race!  In the 200 meters, Darius placed second in 23.2, with Glasser not far behind in 23.7 seconds in third.  Distance runner Peter Kent placed seventh in his first ever 200 meters in 24.9.  Another surprise was when freshman Ian Converse ran an 11:36 in the 3200 meters placing him sixth.  Will Thompson came in right behind Ian at 11:39.  In Ghino Ghilotti's shot put debut, he placed 4th with a throw of 35'10".  Russell and Bondanza both set personal bests with throws of 32'2" and 29"4" respectively.  Recent Varsity promoted freshmen Oprendek and Dennis placed 2nd and 4th in the High Jump.  Nico Dennis also placed 2nd in the Triple Jump with a jump of 38'1" only losing by five inches in his first varsity triple jump competition!  It was yet another dominating performance for our pole vaulters who are a force to be reckoned with.  Luca Sullivan won the pole vault in 13'0", with Jack Rodriques right behind in 12'0".  Saving the best for last:  We went 1,2,3,5 in the men's long jump competition!  Darius won his third event of the day with a jump of 20'4".  Dennis got second with a jump of 18'10".  Margulis came in at 18'6" and Oprendek at 18'0"!  It was another solid day on the boys side and both competitions were so close against Novato and Drake.  Drake 67 - MC - 65.  Novato 72 - MC 63.  The MC boys have lost a couple very close contests this year, but this shows that this program is on the rise!

The JV boys results
:   There weren't many events that we had JV boys competitors in, but in the events that we did, we came to compete!  The JV boys got the meet started with another victory in the 4x100 meter relay!  In the 400 meters, Patrick Smith won it in a time of 57.2!  Brown placed third in 61.9, with Gumm in 4th in 63.5.  In the 100 meters, Nate Gernhard repeated his performance from last week winning the race in 12.1 seconds! Gardner placed fourth in 12.6 seconds, with Roesner and Abrams placing fifth in 12.7.  Nate also repeated in the 200 meters, by running a 24.9 seconds!  Brown placed fourth in 25.8.  We have already promoted several freshmen to varsity from our jv squad and we know that Marin Catholic track and field is in great hands going on into the future!
Next meet:  Thursday, March 26th at 4 pm against Tam, Branson and San Marin.  Location:  Tam High School.
