NCS Track & Field Recap

Over Memorial Day weekend, the MC Track & Field team sent 16 athletes (eight girls and eight boys) to Santa Rosa High School to compete in the North Coast Section! Our boy’s team ended up placing 2nd at NCS giving Track & Field its first pennant in 30 years! It was just such an unbelievable experience as a coach to see all the work that these kids have put in throughout the season end up in such a huge success! We are also sending eight athletes (one girl and seven boys) on to the Meet of Champions this weekend at UC Berkeley!

On the girl’s side: The highlight of the day was our sophomore Bailey Ash placing 6th in the pole vault in a personal best of 9’6”! She is our only girl moving on to the Meet of Champions. Congratulations Bailey! The girl’s 4x100 relay of Tiana Anderson, Jordan Allen, Danielle Fabiano and Sarah Ihnken ran great and placed 9th overall, missing the Meet of Champions by only two spots! Tiana Anderson placed 10th in the 100 meters, followed by Senior Sarah Ihnken in 16th place. Sarah Ihnken then came back and placed 10th in the 200 meters with a personal best of 26.80, breaking the school record in the 200 meters! Jordan Allen set her personal best in the 200 meters as well, running a 27.20! Jordan Allen placed 13th in the 400 meters as well in a time of 62.29. In the last event of the day, the girls 4x400 relay team of Carly Ross, Shannon Farney, Veronica Boyce and Jordan Allen ran really well! We lost Julia Redman this week to injury, so Carly Ross stepped up and set a personal best of 66 seconds on the first leg of the relay! Then Shannon and Veronica also set personal bests, with Jordan Allen running a 63.5 to close it out in her last race for MC. We will miss you Shannon and Jordan! What a year for these girls, as the relay teams continued to improve throughout the season.

On the boy’s side: As mentioned earlier, the boys placed 2nd at NCS which is an amazing feat and something that hasn’t happened in 30 years! We had eight boys running at NCS with seven of them moving on to the Meet of Champions! The boy’s team was highlighted with an NCS championship by our pole vaulter, Luca Sullivan! He set a personal best of 13’9” and won the competition! He is currently ranked 2nd at the Meet of Champions as well. He is only three inches behind the leader! Our 4x100 relay team of Max Glasser, Zachary Margulis, Hunter Juarez and Darius-James Peterson ran an amazing race as well, besting their own school record and running a 43.23! They lost to Maria Carrillo in a photo finish by only .01. This team is ranked 8th going into the Meet of Champions out of 26 schools entered and they could turn some heads! Next, was the 400 meters. We had Max Glasser and Hunter Juarez both advance to the Meet of Champions, placing 2nd and 7th respectively! Top seven moved on. Freshman Max Glasser set a personal best of 50.28 to remain as the 2nd fastest freshman in the state of California in the 400 meters. He also gave me a scare the night before the race when his dad told me that he lost his track bag! We had to call around to the other guys on the team to find Max some spikes to wear at NCS. His Dad found a pair of 10’s at Nathan Gernhard’s house and they fit perfectly. Max went on to set personal bests in every race he ran in. He may want to keep those shoes! Hunter Juarez also set a personal best by running a 51.60 and advancing! Our captain, Darius-James Peterson had another Darius type day by moving on to the Meet of Champions in every event he competed in. He was part of the 2nd place 4x100 relay, and then placed 6th in the 100 meters, 200 meters and Long Jump! I can’t believe he is only a junior! Junior, Jack Rodriques tied for 4th in the pole vault by jumping 12’6” and advancing to the Meet of Champions. Marcus Narodny tied for 7th place with a jump of 12’0”, but missed Meet of Champions based on having more misses. What a great season for Marcus! Lastly, our 4x400 relay team amazed us once again. After initially dropping their 4x400 relay time from 3:53 down to 3:40 and then dropping it once again by six seconds at MCAL’s to 3:34, they dropped another five seconds off at NCS to 3:29! I couldn’t be prouder of these guys, because they continue to improve each time they are out there and went from being the last place team in MCAL’s earlier in the year, to placing 2nd at MCAL championships and 4th at the NCS! They also set the school record in the 4x400 relay! Just wow! They are ranked 13th of 26 competing teams at the Meet of Champions. They deserve every bit of their success too!

Coach’s recap: What can I say about a team that has just blown my mind? I turned 40 years old yesterday and the fact that we had 16 athletes competing at NCS and we placed 2nd on the boy’s side was one of the best presents I could have asked for! My first year of being the head coach of the track team has been more rewarding than I could have ever asked for. The entire team is to thank for the success this weekend. The support grew throughout the year, the camaraderie was there, the parental support, the amazing coaches, it was just an awesome team effort all around and I am so grateful for being able to be a part of it. I am so elated to be able to hang a pennant in the rafters at MC! I have a feeling we have only just begun! If you want to come and check out the Cats at the Meet of Champions, the meet starts on this Friday, May 29th with the preliminaries, with the finals being held on Saturday, May 30th. Both are at UC Berkeley. Thanks again for all of your support!
