Meet of Champions Summary

On the girl’s side:  Sophomore Bailey Ash was our only female competitor in the Meet of Champions this year and wow, did she have a great season!  She placed 19th out of 23 competitors in the pole vault and was one of the youngest in the competition.  This was her first year pole vaulting and tied her personal best at the Meet of Champions with a vault of 9’6”.  She will continue to improve in the years to come!

On the boy’s side:  In the preliminaries on Friday, May 29th, the boy’s 4x100 relay got everything going by moving on to the finals and running another school record time of 43.13 seconds!  Next, was the boy’s 400 meter dash with Max Glasser and Hunter Juarez.  They have both excelled this year at this distance and they came up short of advancing to the finals.  Max is a freshman and Hunter is a sophomore, so much more from these guys in the coming years.  Max ended the season as the 2nd fastest freshman in the entire state in the 400 meters!  Max placed 17th of 24 and was the only freshman in the field.  Darius-James Peterson ran in the 100 meters and came in ranked 17th out of 26 competitors.  He moved up to 11th place and missed making the finals by less than a tenth of a second.  Darius has had such an amazing season this year and next year is his senior year so watch out!  Darius also ran the 200 and improved his placing as he was ranked 24th coming in and placed 20th, only missing the finals by six tenths of a second.  In the last event of the preliminaries, our 4x400 team of Glasser, Buckstaff, Margulis and Juarez tried to better their time once again.  They were unable to move on, but this year they set the school record in 3:29.60 and once again this team is comprised of a freshman, sophomore and two juniors.  I’m so excited for next year!

On Saturday, May 30th, we had the Meet of Champions finals. Only eight teams moved on to the finals and our 4x100 relay team of Glasser, Margulis, Juarez and Peterson were ranked 7th.  They ended up placing 7th in the final as well and missed medaling (top 6) by only .09 seconds.  Our 4x100 relay team was the youngest in the field, so big things to come for this group! Darius also competed in the long jump at the Meet of Champions and placed 19th of 26 competitors.  He scratched on his 2nd attempt which would have vaulted him into the top 10.  Darius was one of the few competitors at the Meet of Champions who made it in all four of his events! In our last event of the day, our senior, Luca Sullivan competed in the pole vault alongside junior, Jack Rodriques.  Jack Rodriques ended up placing 19th with a vault of 12 ft.  His best was 13 ft this season!  Luca ended up as one of the final four competitors with the top three advancing to state next week in Clovis.  In the end, Luca tied for 3rd place but lost due to having more misses on earlier attempts.  He didn’t advance to state but had such an amazing last three weeks of high level competition.  I’m so proud of him and how he really brought his “A game” to every one of our meets this season.  Luca is a senior and we will miss him very much next season.  Time for Jack to take over as our pole vault king next year!

Coach’s Summary: This season was awesome!  We had 16 athletes qualify for NCS, our boy’s team won a 2nd place pennant at NCS (first time in 30 years) and we had eight athletes advance to the Meet of Champions.  We even had a feature article in the IJ last week, I hope you read it.  If not, please click the link below or copy and paste into your browser.  The future of MC track & field is bright!  GO CATS!   See link below:
