Murder Mystery Lab and Chemistry with MC Parents

The chemistry students who have had Sister Rose and Ms.Churchill have spent the month of May conducting inquiry experiments learning techniques to find unknowns. Students have learned techniques to find the density of an unknown substance, qualitative analysis to determine the unknown metals that are present in a solution, and titration tests to find the molarity of an unknown. On the last day of class the parents of chemistry students were invited to join their students for a murder mystery lab to discover the suspect, weapon, and concentration of chemical that was used in the crime.  This lab gave students an opportunity to teach their new lab skills to their parents and provided the students with a chance to review the techniques they had learned in the classroom over the past month. The final exam for the chemistry students will involve a lab that they do by themselves where they have to find the molarity of an unknown solution or determine the metals in a solution using methods they have acquired in May.

And a word from our Marin Catholic parents...

"Thank you so much for the invite! We had a blast, so good to see all the wonderful things going on at MC. I hope more parents get a chance to come see their kids in action. You have made a difference in how students see science. Our son definitely wants to pursue it in college."

"My first thought was how lucky these kids are that you so thoughtful to arrange such a fun final lab and make it even more special by inviting the parents. I'm betting they'll remember your class with a smile for the rest of their lives."

"We truly appreciated the experience you afforded us today. Thank you so much as it was something I had never experienced with any of my other children before."

If I had you as my high school chemistry teacher, I might not have had such a difficult time with the subject in college.  Thank you for giving my kids the confidence to appreciate and enjoy chemistry - and to see how it may be used in real life situations (including those of the criminal variety).”
