Mountain Biking Race 2 Recap

Race 2: Central Coast Challenge @ Laguna Seca (Sunday, March 12, 2017)
Race 2: Central Coast Challenge @ Laguna Seca (Sunday, March 12, 2017)
Welcome to Daylight Savings, and to a cool central Coast sunshine that was hard to beat. What a beautiful day for a five-mile loop of swooping single-track down into the grassy canyon and the famous climb back out to a ridge with a view. From the pitzone overlooking Laguna Seca’s famous race track as well as the green hillsides, MC’s mountain biking community was set for a day of racing fun and community.
The first of the day’s three waves was all girls, and MC’s lady cat racers did great. Freshman Katie Shearin nailed 7th place for the second time in a row, competing in a field of 24 racers, and is now also 7th overall after two races. Junior Siena McGibben had a memorable day, placing fourth in her field of 32, earning her first podium ever (and we’re thinking not the last!).  She has now moved into sixth place overall. Way to go, Siena, and keep climbing! The next wave had an entry for the MC Wildcats this time in Freshman Dillon Solway, who started his race - and his career - at the back of the pack of 55 D2 freshman boys, but finished strong by moving into 38th place. Quite a start, Dillon. Keep on move forward like that every race, and great to have you on the team! Wave three saw our three JV D2 racers heading into their four laps of a race, for a total of 20 miles each. Out of a large field of 53, Seniors Evan Sabadell and Nick Abell place 42 and 34 respectively - and respectably. Evan is now ranked 36, almost in the top half of 64 NorCal D2 riders, and Nick is ranked 28. Good races, seniors, and so long Laguna Seca! Sophomore Kyle Hammer finished the race by achieving his goal of top ten, in fact he placed 10th after 20 fast miles. Way to stick it! Kyle is now 12th in the field for the season.
The day was a success all the way around. Our riders continue to grow athletically, personally and socially, supported constantly (food prep, gear shlep, road trip team pep) by a wonderful team of parents and coaches. The MC Mountain Biking Community continues to represent the commitment that all of MC has to the students and families in our community. Our next race will be back and Fort Ord, and we’re looking forward to the weekend, and the challenges and rewards it will bring.
