More Fun at the Fort

Mountain Biking Returns to Fort Ord
Race 3: More Fun at the Fort @ Fort Ord (Sunday, March 26, 2017)
NorCal Cycling was way blessed with the weather on this one, y’all! It was raining earlier in the week (and the puddles and muddy parking areas were there to prove it), and was scheduled to begin raining again soon after everyone packed up, but what a beautiful day - again - on the central coast! The Monterey Sandstone Formation sandy soil drains well, so this was the league’s dependable back-up-plan when the originally scheduled location was shut down for mud and rock slides. The course was a little different than our first visit of the season, but MC’s riders clearly felt at home with the slight variation on the familiar five-mile loop of twists and turns in rolling oak hills overlooking Monterey Bay.
The girls - as usual - let the way in the first wave. Junior Siena McGibben took 6th in a field of 27 JV female riders for this three-lap race, and even had her proud grandparents out from Colorado cheering her on and taking photos as an added bonus. Siena now finds herself 6th overall for the season as well. Freshman Katie Shearin also continues to race well, earning 8th in her field of 21 freshman racers, and now ranks 7th overall for the season so far. Way to represent, girls!
Wave two was well-represented by MC’s freshman Dillon Solway, who made huge strides and moved all the way up to 15th place in this large field of 49 riders. And his proud mom got her first taste of the fun and excitement of NorCal weekends as an added bonus. Half-way through the season, Dillon is already in the top half of his division, even with a late start to the season. Way to go, Dillon!
Finally, wave three had the fastest racers of the day, and it’s where our three JV boys put everything into their four laps, as did all the 55 racers in their division. Senior Evan Sabadell continues to race well and with a smile on his face, and this day it was with not only his proud parents but also his big sister home from college to cheer him on. Senior Nick Abell finished 29th. Good job, Nick! Sophomore Kyle Hammer had an exciting photo-finish (literally!), which moved him forward into 9th place for the day. Exhaustion well-deserved, dude!
Our small team broke into 10th place this race, among a field of 32 Division 2 teams in NorCal’s northern half! That doesn’t happen by accident, by the way. It’s a product of wonderful coaching, dedicated training, hard work, and the diverse and constant support of our parent community that makes this possible.
