Race 5: Sigma Six Ranch Conference @ Lower Lake (Saturday, April 29, 2017)
What a beautiful weekend for NorCal MtB racing. God smiled on us, for sure. Middletown, Clear Lake, and Kelseyville athletes - our NorCal brothers and sisters - lost their homes, their backyards, and parts of their neighborhoods to fire recently. At the time, many of us worked to deliver hope in the form of donated supplies and whatever we could. In the meantime, the student-athlete-community leaders against whom we’ve enjoyed racing spent their time and treasure this winter and constructed this course, in a record rainy winter, for themselves, for the community, for all of us. The first paragraph of this report is for them, as well as Six Sigma Ranch and Winery for providing an amazing canvas on which they could work. The spirit of community that all of us feel at every race during the NorCal season is heightened by these student-athletes. We humbly thank each of you, and your parents, and your coaches, and your sponsors, for your missionary work. We are honored to share the trail with you, to compete against you, to share the NorCal Mountain Biking season with you.
With this race, NorCal wraps up its 2017 season, and MC’s MtB team is now lined up for the state race in Petaluma in two weeks. Bummer, we missed our morning team meeting on this last race of the season, but Six Sigma Ranch was way out there, a beautiful valley, so not every athlete family made it in time for the team meeting. Even so, the day was full of MC community as well as NorCal MtB community, and another solid reminder of who we are, and who we constantly strive to be.
In the first wave, junior Siena McGibben finished 9th among JV girls, which now places her 6th overall, heading into the state race. Freshman Katie Shearin placed 9th as well, which places her 8th heading into state. Our female athletes continue to represent, and we are proud of both of you! In Wave two, Dillon Solway placed 25th among D2 Freshmen, placing him in the top half heading into state. At the finish line, with both a bleeding knee and a huge smiling grin, Dillon told his dad and this team director “that was the funnest race all season.” So, for those of you who spent the time planning and building this course, thank you for that! Finally, in the third wave of the day, sophomore Kyle Hammer also placed 9th in D2 JV, placing him 8th overall heading into the state race. And, in the same division, senior Nick Abell finished 27th, which places him in the top half as well leading into state for his final NorCal season.
So three of our five racers this weekend finished in the top ten - 9th actually, three of them! With all these strong performances, the MC MtB team took 10th place this race. Top ten, nice work, team! That puts MC’s MtB wildcats 12th out of 32 D2 teams heading into the state race in Petaluma in two weeks. We look forward to sharing the day with everyone in Petaluma. Go Cats!
