Part of our Christian Service Learning program is that we ask a family member to join with their sons or daughters for 5 hours of service.  The goodwill that comes out of our families working together in service is priceless. Seeing our youth reach out courteously and compassionately is a blessing for any parent to witness.  We want our students to develop a deep sense of empathy, and to tangibly feel that special call to love that God has for each of them.

Upon their arrival, those in need were waiting outside to receive a well awaited and anticipated meal. Inside the dining room, our freshmen volunteers greeted, served, and conversed with the people who came to Glide that evening for warm food, conversation and a respite from their hardships. In just a few hours, they served a large number of vulnerable members of society and offered kindness. Many of the people who came in, left that night remembering the respectful manner and smiles of the MC student volunteers. The students were hardworking, engaged, gracious and respectful. Compassion goes a long way.

I will never forget this one man I met as I was clearing his plate. He handed me his empty plate and looked at me with sincere eyes as he said, "Thank you so very much." Those words weren't much, but they meant the world to me.  --Taylor Martin

The most memorable rewards of that day were seeing the gratitude people showed us. It was nice to know we might have made someone a little happier just by serving them their dinner with a smile.
