Marin Catholic can accept students with documented learning differences into our student body if they meet our admissions criteria indicating that they are able to succeed in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. The most important consideration for all is to ensure that the scope of services we provide will adequately meet the needs of the applicant. These support services prove most effective when parents and students actively collaborate with teachers. We cannot modify the curriculum or graduation requirements, but we are able to provide reasonable accommodations and support to qualifying students.
Preliminary Review of Professional Documentation
Students with diagnosed learning differences should supply a copy of the current diagnostic neuropsychological or psychoeducational evaluations to the Admissions Office ASAP. The Director of the ASC reviews the data and analysis, and if needed, will schedule a follow-up meeting with the applicant’s family. By providing us early on with professional documentation, we can make a preliminary determination as to whether our support services will be adequate to meet the student's needs. In some cases, the best interests of the student can be better met in a more comprehensive academic support program.
The Admissions Process Upon receiving the application, testing, and recommendations, we will solicit grades from the applicant's current school. Please urge the school to provide us with any information that you think will help us prepare to meet the needs of the student. An example includes an analysis of current strategies that effectively support your child’s learning needs in middle school. This information should be emailed directly to the Director of Admissions, Janie Rockett:
jrockett@marincatholic.org.
Determination of Support Services Needed for the StudentThe admissions committee will review the student's application, transcripts, and recommendations. In order to be considered for the services from the ASC:
-
Families must submit a comprehensive written evaluation that states a clear diagnosis (DSM number) with data from both aptitude and achievement tests [such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) or the Woodcock Johnson Psychoeducational Battery (WJ - IV)];
a. The report must be current (written within the last three years) and written by a licensed
professional;
AND
b. The report should include data and analysis of a student’s attitude, achievement, and information processing (such as short-and long- term memory, reasoning, attention, and processing speed).
Please note that a letter from a physician in the absence of a psychoeducational or neuropsychological evaluation will not qualify a student for accommodations or services from the ASC. Marin Catholic must receive the above documentation by January 31, 2025.
Summary of the ASC Services
Accommodations:
Qualified students will have Learning Support Plans (LSPs) in place that communicate their diagnoses, illuminate their strengths, and outline classroom and testing support and accommodations. Teachers access the LSPs through their MC Connect student rosters. Families should update testing at a minimum of three years from the original testing date and share those with the ASC, so that LSPs remain current and purposeful. MC does not provide modifications to its curriculum. Generally, modifications occur if a plan alters the complexity or depth of learning expectations.
Support:
The ASC offers three types of support: Academic Support classes for frosh and sophomores, Independent Study classes for juniors and seniors, and consultation appointments. Resource Technology classes, elective courses, provide direct instruction to improve: organization and time management, meta-cognition, reading and note taking techniques, and memory strategies. Independent Study classes provide time during the school day to obtain support on projects, papers, and organization. These non-credit classes do not appear on transcripts. Students not enrolled in ASC classes meet regularly with staff for support. The consultation meeting frequency and length depend on the needs of the individual student.
Caveats:
Enrollment in the ASC does not guarantee accommodations in College Board or ACT testing, as they are external agencies with their own criteria.
Students at MC may receive accommodation plans only if they meet qualifying criteria. Applicants who choose not to submit relevant documentation with their admission packet, may cause a delay or relinquish the opportunity to receive support and accommodations through the ASC.
