Track at MCAL's

May 21st, 2015

The MCAL Track & Field Championships were last Thursday, May 14th and Saturday, May 16th and the Cats really showed up and represented!  MC is sending 16 athletes on to NCS this weekend up at Santa Rosa High School.  Those 16 athletes will be competing in a combined 33 events!  We also had four MCAL champions! The team is stronger than it has been in a long time and very exciting to watch!  Please come out and watch the team this week up at Santa Rosa High School at 9 am.

On the girl’s side:  The group of Tiana Anderson, Danielle Fabiano, Jordan Allen and Sarah Ihnken got the day started with a 4th place finish in the 4x100 relay advancing to NCS next weekend.  Janet Miramontes finished off her track career at MC with a 7th place finish at MCALS in the 100 hurdles, just missing NCS by one place!  We will all miss you Janet!  Jordan Allen advanced to the finals in the 400 meters and then placed 5th in the league moving her on to NCS next week!  She ran her fastest time of the year in 61.90!  Our girls Tiana Anderson and Sarah Ihnken placed 4th and 5th respectively in the 100 meters!  They are both advancing to NCS.  In the finals of the girls 200 meters, three of the final eight were from MC!  Jordan Allen placed 5th and Sarah Ihnken came in right behind her in 6th.  Both of these ladies are moving on to NCS this weekend!  Jordan Allen set the school record in this race running a 27.38!  Sophomore Julia Redman placed 7th in the 200 meters which is an amazing feat in her first year of track!  Our last story on the track for the day was the 4x400 relay.  This team came out of nowhere to improve to 6th in the league and dropped six seconds off of their time!  This team was comprised of Julia Redman, Shannon Farney, Veronica Boyce and Jordan Allen.  They are all moving on to NCS!  Bailey Ash moved on to NCS by vaulting a personal best of 9 feet in the pole vault!  Sarah Ihnken was the MCAL champion in the long jump!  Sarah also set the school record this season in the long jump with a jump of 17’1”! The girls scored 28 points at MCALS and placed 7th out of 9 teams.

On The boy’s side:  The boys ran another amazing race and continued their undefeated season in the 4x100 relay.  The team of Max Glasser, Zachary Margulis, Hunter Juarez and Darius-James Peterson became MCAL champions in a time of 43.63!  This time also ranks them 2nd this week at NCS! In prelims on Thursday, they set the school record in a time of 43.45!  Freshman Ian Converse ran a personal best in the 1600 and broke five minutes for the first time running a 4:54!  Senior Will Thompson ran a 5:01 mile.  Freshman phenom Max Glasser placed 2nd in the 400 meters and sophomore Hunter Juarez placed 4th in the same race.  Both of them are moving on to NCS!  Darius-James Peterson came back from winning the 4x100 relay to win the 100 meters in a time of 11.43 seconds for his 2nd MCAL championship of the day! Darius also set the school record in the 100 meters this season at 11.16! Zachary Margulis placed 7th and barely missed moving on.  Junior Peter Kent placed 9th in the 800 meters dropping his personal best to 2:08.20 this season!  Darius came back once again to win yet another MCAL title in the 200 meters!  His third on the day!  He ran a blazing time of 22.54 winning by over ½ of a second.  Freshman Max Glasser placed 3rd.  Both are advancing to NCS.  In the boys 3200 meters, Senior Will Thompson ran a personal best of 10:58 to break 11 minutes for the first time in his last race for the Cats!  He is another senior that will be sorely missed next year.  In one of the best stories of the season, the boys 4x400 relay ran the races of their lives.  Earlier in the year they were ranked 10th in the league with a time of 3:53.  After a time trial we found our relay runners and they improved to 3:40.  In the final at MCAL these kids dropped another six seconds off of their time and almost won the race!  They lost by only .28 seconds in one of the closest races I have ever seen.  They went from being ranked last to getting 2nd at MCALs and being in the fast heat at NCS this week.  Just an awesome story!  In the boy’s long jump, Darius placed 4th and Zachary placed 6th advancing them to NCS.  Darius also set the school record this season in the long jump with a jump of 20’7 ½”!  In the boy’s pole vault, three of the six NCS qualifiers were from Marin Catholic!  Luca Sullivan placed 3rd, followed by Jack Rodriques in 5th and Marcus Narodny in 6th with a big personal best of 12 feet! Lastly, the boy’s team placed 3rd in MCALS scoring 69.5 points!  This is a big improvement off of the last few seasons, as MC has placed 10th each year.  We want to keep growing each and every year and an MCAL championship could be in the cards for this young squad!

Coach’s recap:  Needless to say, I’m so proud of the entire track team and how everything culminated at MCALS.  All their hard work paid off and they just did tremendously.  I am very excited for NCS this weekend and have a great feeling that we will be sending several people to the Meet of Champions in Berkeley next weekend.
