A merciful promise

Shane Farrow
The righteous Lamb set up to die
On a cross, God’s son held high
Writhing in pain, the world’s true light
Sees a man to his left, and a man to his right
They lie in shame near the sinless one
Next to the sad and suffering Son
Both are sinners and have lost the way
But one decides he has something to say
“Are you really the king?
Can’t you do anything?
Can you not save us all
From these crosses, to which we cling?”
The other replied to the criminal’s scold
Defending the Son, which was quite bold
“This man is pure! He has done no wrong!
But we have deserved our death all along!”
And this good thief still has one more plea
An aching desire to be set free
“O blameless one, please, have mercy!
When you enter your kingdom, remember me!”
Although he was exhausted and about to die
The merciful Lord exclaimed with a cry
Though his body on fire, his voice was holy ice
“Today you will be with me in paradise”
This man was a sinner who did wrong all his days
but gave Jesus his faith as well as his praise
And the savior who loved him saved him from damnation
Because he believed, he received his salvation
