Guest Speakers Inspire MC Students

Last week, Marin Catholic's Health & Wellness Program welcomed acclaimed speakers, Shasta Nelson and Andre Salvage. The speakers emphasized the importance of supportive, healthy relationships and the impact they have on our health and happiness.

Shasta Nelson
spoke to the Marin Catholic girls. At the assembly she impressed upon the girls that friendships don't just happen, they develop. Shasta explained that friendships begin at one level and develop into deeper levels along a spectrum which she helped define.  Deep friendship must have three key ingredients; time together, positivity, and shared feelings.  Shasta also addressed jealousy and comparing emphasizing that these things are hard or nearly impossible to avoid.  Jealousy should be turned into an appreciation of another's qualities and a recognition that one would like to further develop those qualities.

Andre Salvage spoke to the young men of Marin Catholic. He focused on what he labeled as "the three R's": Respect, Responsibility and Rejection. For boys to become men of character, Mr. Salvaged emphasized the need for them to follow their instinct. That to do what is right may run counter to what society tells young men to do. Mr. Salvage noted that the pressure "to be a man" may be confusing at times and he stressed that conforming to social pressures is not always in one's best interest. Mr. Salvage drew from a range of life stories, highlighting his own experiences growing up and the decisions he faced on his path to adulthood. His message to the MC boys was that respecting oneself and others is the foundation of being a man. That challenges will be constantly present in life and a true man of character will follow his instincts, take care of himself and his peers and develop healthy, positive relationships.
