Sister Rose Makes Final Vows

In the summer of 2018, Marin Catholic’s Sister Rose made her final vows as a Sister of the Dominican Order. Her beautiful journey has guided her to her true purpose as a woman of God.
When she renewed her vows, Sr. Rose came to Marin Catholic. Although Sister had previously obtained a teaching degree in science, Marin Catholic was her first experience of having a classroom of her own. This too was part of her call and time of discernment–- did teaching bring her joy? Did she love the students? Could she joyfully live as a Sister while carrying out the mundane daily chores of grading papers, folding laundry and washing dishes? The answer was a resounding yes.

A Sister spends eight years discerning God’s call. She begins as a postulant, living with the community and exploring what it means to give one’s life to God. Next, she spends two years as a novice: the habit and a new name are received, and the Sister begins an intense study of the vows, religious life, and theology.

After novitiate, a Sister makes temporary vows for short periods of time (two years and then three more). These vows are solemn promises to God that she will live a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. With the vow of poverty, a Sister gives up all possessions and shows that God is the true treasure of humanity. With the vow of chastity, a Sister gives up the gift of marriage and shows that the love of God is what endures in every life. With the vow of obedience, the Sister gives up personal freedom under the principle that God guides us toward a life
of wonder, mercy, grace, and love.

On July 25, 2018, Sr. Rose lay before the altar.  She made her vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience not just for two or three years, but “for all [her] life.” Before a Church packed with hundreds of witnesses, including some very proud representatives from Marin Catholic, Sr. Rose boldly proclaimed her vows. There was no fear or hesitation, only a deep peace, and tangible joy. This was her wedding day and like any bride, Sr. Rose was radiant.

Marin Catholic
is honored to have been part of Sr. Rose’s journey. Her religious vocation has been a gift to the campus since she arrived.  We are so grateful for the vocation of this special young woman.
