Faculty 35, Seniors 30

The Faculty/Staff held off the Seniors in the annual Student vs. Faculty basketball game.
KENTFIELD, CA
The Senior Girls started off strong vs. the Faculty/Staff, taking a 10-0 lead into the after one quarter of play during the annual Student vs. Faculty basketball game.  The Pera Twins (shared 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals) were all over the court, scoring 5 points between them in the first quarter.  Additional first quarter stars were Sarah Ihnken (2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals), and Jenna Garcia (2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal).

The faculty, while not able to get on the board, had a solid effort by Gina Jaeger (4 rebounds), Brittney Diego (4 rebounds, 2 steals) Lynn Maloney (2 rebounds, 2 steals) Sister Maria Catherine (1 steal), and Joan McInnis.

In the second quarter, the Senior Boys were matched up with the Male Faculty.  This time, the faculty put on the show.  The combination of solid ball control and passing by team captain Dave Basso (2 points, 1 assist, 1 steal), brute force by the Jaeger brothers (shared 5 points, 7 rebounds), dual threat Adam Groshong (6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists), and a brief, but magic show by Jeff Stewart (5 points), led the faculty in a 17-7 run of the students to end the half.  The second wave of faculty was led by newcomer Rory O'Brien (8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals), perennial star Coach Wayne Patton (3 points, 7 rebounds), and defensive specialists, Ryan Mosse and Joe Ward.  Tom Thompson even saw some action in the first half, continuing his streak of most consecutive appearances.

For the students, Gino Ghilotti (2 points, 3 rebounds) and Billy Alten (2 points, 2 rebounds) were bright spots, but it was Kevin Gavney's 3-pointer that lit the stands up.  Bryan Jakiemiec (1 block), Riley Sell (2 rebounds, 1 steal), and Harrison Williams (1 rebound) were solid contributers on defense that stopped the bleeding, ending the half tied at 17.

At halftime and after a nice tribute to the Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball and Dance teams given by members of the Student Council, the crowd was treated to a performance by the Dance team.

In the third quarter, the Female Faculty started off with a strong defense by Sister Clare Marie (1 steal), Katie Smith (1 rebound, 1 steal), Terrie Freni-Johnson, Patricia Wagner, Jeannine Gruenwald, and Mary Churchill.  Fancy ball handling by Nicole Ferris (3 rebounds, 1 steal) kept the Faculty in the game.

For the students, Natasha Rosenbach (2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal), Jill Grialou (2 rebounds), Carmela Karcher (2 rebounds), Jacqueline Lapoint (4 rebounds), and Laruen Miller (2 points, 2 rebounds) put the students back up 22-17 by the end of the third quarter.

The last 11 minutes were exciting as the students maintained their lead of the faculty behind the efforts of Riley Sell (2 rebounds), Julian Ferrell (1 point, 1 steal), Jack Horan (2 rebounds), and the Kunst cousins (shared 1 point, 4 rebounds, 1 steal).  The faculty came back when Basso and the Jeagers returned with rookie JP Manfredi to even the score shortly into the final frame of the game.  John Herr (2 rebounds), Andy Van Horn and Andre Demian subbed in to provide some defensive sturdiness for the faculty as the game remained close midway through the fourth quarter.

Joe Kelly (4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal), Johnny MacLean (2 points), and Will Kiekefer (1 rebound) gave the faculty a scare late in the fourth.  It was back and forth, but the faculty pulled ahead 31-29 with just over a minute left through key free throws by Adam Groshong and Rory O'Brien.   Impressive ball handling by Dave Basso set up a huge 3 pointer by Wayne Patton to put the game away with the final score, 35-30.

Special Recognition to Coaches Mike Saia and Mazi Moayed for exceptional refereeing performances.  A HUGE THANK YOU to witty Tom Lippi for being the Voice of the Wildcats once again.  Great job by everyone who participated, and we will see you next year when the current Juniors will lace it up against the faculty in 2016.
