Great showing for the Cats in San Anselmo!
The MC Track & Field team headed to Drake last Saturday to compete in the annual Drake scrimmage. It was a very encouraging first meet for the Cats! This meet has several different events like the 2,000 meters, 1,200 meters, 600 meters and the co-ed 8x200 meter relay. The 2,000 meters was the first event of the day and freshman Alexa Tagliaferri got the day started with a 7th place finish in 7:59. On the boys side, another freshman, Andrew Thompson, placed 6th out of 31 with a time of 6:46. Blake Thomas followed right behind Thompson in 6:48. The 2nd event was the co-ed 8 x 200 relay. This is a great chance to establish camaraderie within the team and one of the few times you will see a co-ed race out on the track. The MC team ended up winning in comeback fashion as Darius Peterson got the baton about five meters behind and raced to victory! This team was comprised of Darius Peterson, Zack Margulis, Hunter Juarez, Jack Wight, Caroline Brockman, Payton Burger, Tara Henry and Julia Redman. The next event was the 100 meters. On the girls' side, newly crowned team captain, Julia Redman, placed 7th out of 72 with a time of 13.5 and Grace Kripal, in her first track meet ever, placed 15th in a time of 13.9! On the boys' side, we placed six of the top seven! Darius won the 100 meters, with Hunter only .01 behind him! The 1200 meters was the first track & field race for senior, Nicholas Doerschlag and he made it count! He raced out to the lead on the 2nd lap and ended up placing 2nd overall out of 30 runners. He ran a 3:24 and only lost by one second! In the 600 meters, freshman Andrew Thompson had a great race, winning his heat in 1:32 and placing 6th out of 53 runners overall! Senior Peter Kent ran a 1:32 as well and placed 8th overall. Freshman Nick Meringolo placed 17th in a time of 1:36. This was one of the best performances of the day! The last running event of the day was the 300 meters. Caroline Brockman placed 9th in 46.5 seconds! This was Caroline's first track meet as well! Julia Redman ran a 47.7 seconds and placed 14th. There were 48 runners in the 300 meters. In the discus, Elaine Shaw threw 59' and placed 3rd, only losing by one foot! Collin Martin placed 3rd as well with a 16 foot personal best! In the pole vault, Bailey Ash placed 2nd with a vault of 10'. Jack Rodriques placed 2nd as well with a vault of 12'. Marcus Narodny placed 3rd at 11'. In the high jump, Gabe Ramirez placed 3rd with a jump of 5'6"! He came back to place 4th in the triple jump with a jump of 36'7". Lastly, freshman Tyler Pendleton placed 6th in the shot put, throwing 32'2" and setting a personal best by over two feet! The Drake scrimmage is always a great meet for us coaches to see where the kids will fit in on the team and what events will best suit them going forward. Several other coaches gave compliments to our team and one coach was quoted as saying "I'm depressed because you guys are lookin' so good out there." This is very exciting to be a part of. The running culture at Marin Catholic has been building over the last few years and we definitely have a chance to do something special this season! The first regular season track meet is this Thursday up in Napa at Justin Siena. Come out and support the Cats! -Coach Patton
