The Mountain Bikers head to Folsom Lake for Race #2
Folsom Lake had great weather, more water, and lots of spinning wheels for second weekend of racing in the NorCal season. A trail loop listed at about 6.5 miles and close to 700 feet elevation per lap had some technical rocky climbs, some single track, some sandy patches, and lots of lake-side scenery, as well as the usual cheering families, supportive friends and team-mates, and challenging competition. Wave 1 started the day of cross-country mountain biking: Kyle Hammer had earned himself a first row start for the Freshman Division 2 category, and was focused on his race . A pile-up right at the get-go, however, came out of nowhere and took out a few riders, including Kyle. Luckily, injuries were eventually determined to be minor, and our bummed but determined freshman is setting his sights on the next race. In Wave 2, sophomore Siena McGibben finished 7th, which was fast, but not in her eyes. That now ranks her 8th out of the 21 NorCal sophomore girls. She’ll be refocusing over the next two weeks. Wave 3 included the JV Boys D2 race - all 71 riders - riding hard for three laps. Drew Nash finished 31st, Morgan Schmitz 35th, Nick Abell 39th, and Evan Sabadell 59th. Our four JV boys all met personal goals for the race, and three of them are currently ranked in the top third of NorCal’s JV D2 field. Marin Catholic’c team performance for the day was ranked 16th out of the 34 NorCal D2 teams, and we are now 14th-ranked overall. The day - as it always is - was made rich by the community of families spending the day together, and especially meaningful for Morgan and his appreciative parents, who were able to celebrate his 18th birthday with this wonderful team community. Coaches Beau Gaston, Mike Yoham, and David Gooder, with the much-appreciated support of Mike McGibben, all made sure the day went well, and each coach and parent are appreciated for their talent and time.
