Cancer Awareness Club Receives Certificate for Support of American Cancer Society

Every October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cancer Awareness Club and the Girls' League join forces and have a huge bake sale over 1-2 full days to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment. Members from both clubs bring in hundreds of baked goods and sell them at break and lunch. They also sell bracelets and state facts and statistics about breast cancer. The bake sale brings in between $500 and $700. Moderators Lisa Ingles and Terrie Freni-Johnson spearheaded this effort a few years ago to bring awareness of the importance of breast examinations for our young girls. Terrie, the Cancer Awareness Club moderator, is a breast cancer survivor who discovered her own lump and wants girls to realize the importance of self-examinations. Lisa, the Girls' League moderator, empowers girls to be mentally and emotionally strong and to take care of themselves physically.
